Falkland Islands mark 434 years since first recorded sighting

The Falkland Islands marked Falklands Day on August 14, commemorating the 434th anniversary of the first recorded sighting of the archipelago in 1592. The sighting is attributed to English navigator John Davis, who commanded the vessel ‘Desire’ after being blown off course while attempting to round Cape Horn.

The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly observed the day by raising the Falkland Islands flag and the Union flag in Stanley. In a statement, the Assembly described the occasion as a time to reflect on the territory’s history, its diverse population, and the community’s right to determine its own future.

King Charles III issued a message of congratulations to the new Legislative Assembly and the people of the islands. The King praised the community’s resilience and highlighted ongoing local developments, including new infrastructure for sports, waste management, wind energy, and port facilities, as well as efforts to address climate change through a new Adaptation Plan.
