Fallout: New Vegas receives New Vegas RTX path tracing mod
A new graphical modification titled ‘New Vegas RTX’ has been released for the classic role-playing game Fallout: New Vegas. Developed by modder Kim2091 and available on Nexus Mods, the project utilizes NVIDIA RTX Remix to implement full path tracing, significantly enhancing the game’s lighting and environmental effects.
The mod introduces a physically-based sky system featuring atmospheric scattering, volumetric clouds, stars, and a moon that adjusts according to the game’s internal time and weather. Lighting is calculated dynamically, accounting for light sources both within and outside the player’s field of view, including muzzle flashes, torches, neon signs, and the Pip-Boy device. Water effects have also been updated to include waves, realistic light refraction, and caustics.
To achieve these results, the developer created a custom game wrapper and an NVSE plugin to feed scene data directly from the game engine to the renderer. This approach aims to provide performance and visual fidelity closer to a native path tracing renderer than standard RTX Remix implementations. The mod supports PBR materials, parallax textures, and various upscaling technologies, including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS. While the main campaign is currently playable, the project remains in active development.
