Falls and burns lead child hospitalizations in Brazil

In 2025, falls and burns were the leading causes of hospitalization for children and adolescents up to 14 years old in Brazil. Data compiled by the Projeto Criança Segura, an initiative of the NGO Aldeias Infantis SOS, indicates that falls accounted for over 55,000 hospitalizations (43.4% of the total for this age group), while burns resulted in more than 25,000 hospitalizations (19.6%).

According to DataSUS records, there were approximately 162,000 accident-related hospitalizations for children and adolescents in the country during 2025, representing 9.7% of all accident hospitalizations across all age groups. On average, 10,700 minors were hospitalized monthly due to accidents.

Geographically, the highest number of hospitalizations occurred in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Paraná. However, when adjusted for population density, the states of Pará, Tocantins, and Maranhão reported the highest hospitalization rates per 100,000 inhabitants.
