Falls prevention and detection strategies for older adults
Falls among older adults present significant health and safety challenges, necessitating a distinction between prevention, detection, and response. Prevention strategies include improving home environments with better lighting, secure rugs, and handrails, as well as addressing individual risk factors like balance, vision, and medication.
Detection technologies range from wearable pendants and watches to motion sensors, though automatic detection may still produce false alerts or miss certain events. Response protocols vary, with some systems alerting professional monitoring centers while others notify family members via apps or calls.
In Australia, the Falls Prevention Alliance reports that one in three Australians aged 65 and over experiences a fall annually, leading to approximately 400 hospital admissions and 16 deaths every day. To combat this, Northern Health is trialing a personalized approach to help patients understand individual risk factors during recovery. The Alliance is also advocating for a National Action Plan and increased access to evidence-based prevention programs.
