Falmouth residents push to remove rising bollard blocking town centre traffic
A petition to remove a rising bollard that blocks vehicle access to Falmouth town centre between 11 am and 4 pm has gathered more than 700 signatures. The campaign, launched by resident Mark Peters, urges Cornwall Council to eliminate the bollard to allow 24‑hour access to businesses on Market Street, Church Street, Arwenack Street and the adjacent 168‑space Church Street car park, which petitioners say is "vastly underused".

A previous petition with 68 signatures seeking a seasonal lowering of the bollard was rejected by the council for not reaching a 250‑signature threshold. Town centre manager Richard Gates noted that attempts to negotiate a summer‑only compromise have stalled. While many local traders support removal, a minority group, Falmouth Afoot, backs the bollard as part of broader pedestrianisation plans. Falmouth Business Improvement District manager Keren Cooksey also submitted a separate petition of 60 signatures asking the council to keep the bollard lowered during winter.
