Famagusta Municipality intensifies mosquito control against West Nile virus

The Famagusta Municipality has intensified its mosquito control efforts following the detection of the West Nile virus in Northern Cyprus. The municipality's health unit has been conducting regular spraying in wetlands, ponds, streams, and stagnant water areas since February.

To strengthen the response, the frequency of spraying operations has been increased from every 21 days to every 15 days. In addition to scheduled night spraying (ULV applications), the municipality plans to implement biological spraying via drones once weather conditions permit. Private companies have also been contracted to expand the reach and effectiveness of these operations.

Health Unit Head İlke Sabit Soyer emphasized that all field controls and applications are being coordinated by the municipality. Residents are urged to assist in public health efforts by preventing water accumulation in flowerpot saucers, buckets, barrels, and other containers around homes and workplaces to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
