Famaillá: The 1841 battle that reshaped northern Argentina

On September 19, 1841, the Battle of Famaillá (also known as the Battle of Monte Grande) took place in Argentina, marking a decisive moment in the country's civil wars. Federal troops led by Manuel Oribe defeated the forces of Juan Lavalle and the Tucumán troops commanded by Marco Manuel de Avellaneda.

The defeat of Lavalle's Liberating Army had significant political and military consequences for northern Argentina. The victory for Oribe facilitated the consolidation of federal control over Tucumán and effectively halted the movement organized in the north against Juan Manuel de Rosas. Following the battle, Avellaneda was captured and executed in Metán, while Lavalle retreated north and died in San Salvador de Jujuy on October 8, 1841.
