Familial hypercholesterolemia risks in children and young adults

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a common hereditary metabolic disorder, poses significant health risks to children and young adults due to elevated LDL cholesterol levels from birth. It is estimated that one in 250 children is affected by this condition, yet many remain undiagnosed during childhood.

Professor Dr. Bojko Bjelaković warns that the risks are particularly pronounced for young adults aged 20 to 40 who have undiagnosed FH. Long-term consequences include an increased risk of early heart disease, narrowed blood vessels, and serious cardiovascular events.

Early detection through lipid profile blood tests is critical. Medical professionals recommend monitoring for family histories of early-onset heart attack, stroke, angina pectoris, or sudden death. Timely diagnosis allows for management through lifestyle changes and medical therapy.
