Families in northeast Nigeria seek answers for missing relatives

In northeastern Nigeria, families continue to search for loved ones missing due to years of violence and the Boko Haram crisis. In Maiduguri, Kashim Mohammed, chair of the Association for the Well-being of Displaced and Missing Persons’ Families, recounts the 2011 abduction of his sister, Falmata Mohammed, and mother by unidentified gunmen while traveling from Borno State to Port Harcourt.

Mohammed noted a brief, unverified lead involving a man who claimed Falmata had been located in Benin, though the individual disappeared without providing contact details. Similarly, Muhammad Alhaji Bashir reported that his brother, Adam Muhammad Bashir, went missing around 2012 or 2013 during the height of the regional instability.

The prolonged uncertainty has had significant personal impacts on the community, including the death of Mohammed Kolo, who died at age 60 without knowing the fate of his daughter.
