Mexico disappearance crisis: Protesters block highway to demand justice

Families of missing persons, led by collectives such as Mariposas Buscando Corazones y Justicia Nacional, concluded a 36-to-37-hour blockade of the Mexico-Toluca highway near Lerma, State of Mexico. The protest was launched to demand direct dialogue with the State of Mexico Attorney General, José Luis Cervantes Martínez, and to seek progress in investigations regarding dozens of disappearance cases.

The demonstration resulted in significant traffic congestion and several confrontations. During the unrest, motorists reportedly attacked the protesters, leading to injuries among at least three female activists.

Following negotiations, an agreement was reached with the Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de México (FGJEM). The terms include the establishment of permanent working tables with specialized prosecutors to review case files and the creation of a special litigation unit to prevent investigative delays. The FGJEM also committed to evaluating the performance of officials to ensure accountability in the search processes.
