Families of N290 accident victims share tributes before trial

Families of Damian, Olivia, and Sarah have released photos and personal memories of their children ahead of the first public hearing regarding the N290 traffic tragedy in Vogelwaarde. The three 12-year-olds lost their lives in June during a school trip involving students from De Warande primary school in Axel.

The accident occurred on June 11 when a vehicle struck a group of fourteen students and two supervisors who were cycling. In addition to the three children, the school's director, Joyce van Driel, also passed away, and several other children were seriously injured.

Through the organization ‘Namens de Familie’, the parents shared tributes to highlight their children's personalities beyond the accident. Sarah is remembered as a joyful girl who loved dancing and aspired to be a teacher. Olivia is described as a social, athletic, and warm presence in her large family. Damian was preparing to start secondary school after the summer break. The families released these images to ensure their children are remembered for who they were rather than solely as victims.
