Family Demands Dignity Over New Police Station at Mauro Guerra Site
On the 11th anniversary of Mauro Guerra's death, his family renewed calls for respect and dignity. Guerra, a 32‑year‑old economist, was shot by Carabinieri Sergeant Marco Pegoraro in July 2015 while fleeing a compulsory health‑treatment checkpoint near Carmagnano, a frazione of Sant’Urbano in Italy. Pegoraro was acquitted of criminal liability in 2018, but a 2022 Venice Court of Appeal found him civilly responsible for negligent homicide and ordered provisional compensation of €260,000 to the family.
Mother Giusy Businaro and sister Elena Guerra protested the inauguration of a new police station built in the former elementary school where Guerra lived, arguing that its location disregards the tragedy and violates earlier municipal promises to commemorate him with a street name. The family says the Carabiniere showed no remorse and stresses that a modest relocation of the facility would have honored their loss.
Mayor Dionisio Fiocco has explained that naming streets and squares follows specific regulations, but the family's criticism highlights ongoing tensions between local authorities and citizens over how the incident is remembered.
