Family Farmstead Dairy recalls cheddar cheese due to E. coli concerns

Family Farmstead Dairy, based in Worcester, has issued a recall for one lot of its Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese after testing identified two strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The affected product features a best-by date of July 22, 2027, and lot code 7/22/27.

The cheese has been distributed to retailers in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts, though it may have reached other states through downstream distributors. The company distributes to various grocery chains, including Whole Foods Market and Fresh Direct.

As of the announcement, no illnesses or adverse reactions related to this specific recall have been reported. However, health officials warn that E. coli infections can cause severe symptoms, including bloody diarrhea and vomiting. In some cases, particularly among children and the elderly, the bacteria can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition resulting in kidney failure.
