Family law attorneys in the Netherlands face widespread threats

An investigation by Investico, De Groene Amsterdammer, and RTL Nieuws reveals that nearly 40 percent of family law attorneys in the Netherlands have faced threats in cases involving physical or psychological partner violence. Out of 440 lawyers who responded to a survey, 165 reported being subjected to online, verbal, or physical threats by opposing parties.

The majority of these incidents (135 to 136 lawyers) occurred when representing clients who were alleged victims of coercive control, domestic violence, or intimate terror. Reported threats range from verbal abuse and online harassment to physical intimidation, such as being followed, having vehicles vandalized, or being cornered in public spaces. Some lawyers reported extreme cases involving stalking and death threats.

Experts suggest this rise in aggression may be a side effect of increased legal and social recognition of intimate terror. As perpetrators face more boundaries and legal consequences, the pattern of violence may shift toward those surrounding the victim, including lawyers and social workers. Legal professionals have warned that such intimidation could discourage victims from seeking necessary legal representation.
