Family of Mauricio Hernández Norambuena denies criminal links

The family of Mauricio Hernández Norambuena has issued a statement rejecting reports by the newspaper El Mercurio that attempt to link him to the Brazilian criminal organization Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC).

The family asserts that there is no evidence connecting Hernández Norambuena or his family to the PCC. They cited a 2018 ruling from a São Paulo criminal execution court which stated there was no proof of his membership in or leadership of any criminal organization.

Furthermore, the family characterized the publication as a political attempt to discredit his history as a social activist. They expressed concern that such reporting aims to portray him as dangerous to justify harsh imprisonment conditions, noting that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights previously ruled on Brazil's responsibility regarding his prolonged isolation and the resulting impact on his health.
