Family of Natividad Cañizares protests house arrest request for convicted femicide perpetrator
The family of Natividad Cañizares and the collective ‘Madres y Padres del Dolor’ are protesting a request for house arrest made by the defense of José Nicolás Romero. Romero was sentenced to life imprisonment for the femicide of Cañizares, which occurred in October 2024.
Romero, currently held at the Alto Comedero penal unit, has requested the judicial benefit citing health issues he has reportedly faced for over two years. While Judge Salvador Gustavo Ortiz did not grant the request during a recent remote hearing, the decision remains pending the results of a medical board evaluation.
Family members and activists argue that the penitentiary system has sufficient medical staff and resources to treat the inmate within the prison. They maintain that individuals convicted of grave crimes such as femicide should not receive sentence mitigations or benefits that could pose a risk to public safety.
