Family of slain NYPD officer fights Eddie Matos parole hearing

The family of slain NYPD Officer Anthony Dwyer and the Police Benevolent Association are fighting to prevent the parole of Eddie Matos, who was convicted of murdering Dwyer in 1989. Matos is currently serving a sentence of 25 years to life at the Green Haven Correctional Facility.

A new parole hearing has been scheduled for November 6, following a court order from the Dutchess County Supreme Court. The order for a new hearing came after lawyer Isaac Zaur argued that the parole board had relied on an impermissible mischaracterization of Matos’s prison record. While the board previously denied parole citing a pattern of institutional misconduct, court paperwork filed by Zaur indicates Matos has not received disciplinary reports since 2019.

The previous denial by the Parole Board also cited Matos’s prior convictions in Connecticut for burglary, larceny, and theft of a firearm.
