Family petitions Nigerian police over missing corpse in Anambra hospital

The family of Chukwunweike Okammelu, an engineer whose body allegedly disappeared from the mortuary of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka, Anambra State, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police for a supplementary investigation.

Through their lawyer, Joseph Offor, the family expressed dissatisfaction with a report issued by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT). While the report acknowledged potential criminal conspiracy and systemic failures, it recommended the prosecution of only the mortician, Clement Ogbonna.

The petition argues that the current findings contain material omissions, inconsistencies, and investigative gaps. The family contends that the investigation failed to adequately address administrative negligence or identify all individuals potentially responsible for the disappearance, specifically regarding the chain of custody and institutional accountability.
