FamilyMart reduces daily deliveries to two in Chugoku and Shikoku regions

FamilyMart is transitioning its temperature-controlled delivery system from three deliveries per day to two for approximately 1,200 stores in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, effective from October 6. This move is part of a broader strategy to optimize logistics, reduce food loss, and lower CO2 emissions in response to driver shortages and rising energy and raw material costs.

By utilizing proprietary rice-cooking technology that extends the shelf life of products like onigiri, the company has successfully implemented similar two-delivery systems in the Hokuriku region and is planning expansions in the Tohoku and Niigata regions. With this latest expansion, the total number of stores utilizing the two-delivery system will reach approximately 3,200.

The logistics shift is expected to reduce annual truck operations by about 140 trips per day (a 35% reduction) and decrease total driving distance by approximately 5.2 million kilometers, leading to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. Additionally, FamilyMart will introduce region-specific chilled and frozen bento boxes to the Chugoku and Shikoku markets to maximize sales opportunities.
