FamilyMart to deploy hybrid staffed and self-service registers nationwide

FamilyMart has announced the nationwide rollout of a new type of POS register system designed to switch seamlessly between staffed (manned) and self-service modes. The company aims to complete the installation across approximately 16,500 stores by the end of the current fiscal year ending February 2027.

This is the company’s first major overhaul of its register system in roughly nine years. The new hardware, provided by Toshiba Tec, allows stores to adjust operations based on real-time demand. For example, during peak hours or when customers purchase age-restricted items like alcohol and tobacco, staff can operate in manned mode. During quieter periods, such as late at night, the terminals can be switched to self-service mode to allow staff to focus on restocking and cleaning.

FamilyMart expects this transition to reduce daily register-related labor by approximately 20%. The new system also includes automated change dispensers to prevent errors and enhance security. To support diverse customer bases, the company plans to implement multilingual support, including English and Japanese phonetic guides, to assist children, seniors, and foreign nationals.
