Fan creates first-person perspective mod for Diablo

A modder known as Drelvak has developed a modification for the original 1997 Diablo that transforms the classic isometric action-RPG into a first-person shooter experience. The project, titled ‘Diablo 1 in First Person’, utilizes the community-driven DevilutionX engine to reimagine the journey through Tristram from the hero's point of view.

To maintain the feel of the original while adapting to the new perspective, the mod includes visual feedback such as screen-shake effects during attacks and a red crosshair indicator when enemies are hit. The modder also implemented features like persistent loot labels and streamlined item collection. Due to the use of 2D sprites for characters and enemies, the visual style closely resembles early 1990s shooters like Doom. The creator utilized artificial intelligence tools to assist with programming and applied original textures to 3D models to recreate familiar locations.
