Fano implements GPS decoy bicycles to combat theft

The municipality of Fano has launched a dual-purpose initiative to improve urban decorum and combat bicycle theft. Local police recently recovered 21 abandoned bicycles from various neighborhoods, including the historic center, Lido, Sassonia, and several public parks. These bicycles, many of which were in a state of decay, were removed from sidewalks, hedges, and bike racks to clear public spaces.

In addition to removing abandoned property, Mayor Luca Serfilippi has introduced a strategy to catch thieves by deploying decoy bicycles equipped with GPS tracking devices. These devices are placed in strategic locations throughout the city to monitor movement and assist the Local Police in identifying those responsible for thefts and illegal reselling. The recovered abandoned bicycles have been inventoried and moved to a municipal depot while authorities investigate if any are linked to reported thefts.
