Fano Mayor faces backlash over Almirante naming proposal

The Mayor of Fano, Luca Serfilippi, has faced significant backlash following a proposal to name a street or public square after Giorgio Almirante, the former leader of the Movimento Sociale Italiano.

Various political and historical organizations have voiced strong opposition. The Circolo Gramsci described the proposal as a “cynical” act that crosses a “red line” regarding the city's relationship with the legacy of the fascist regime. Similarly, city councilors Cristian Fanesi and Dimitri Tinti criticized the move, stating that choosing Almirante evokes a “dark, authoritarian, and anti-democratic” past rather than projecting the city into the future.

The National Association of Italian Anti-Fascist Political Persecuted (Anppia Marche) also issued a formal protest. The association highlighted Almirante’s historical ties to fascist propaganda and his role within the Italian Social Republic (RSI) during the Nazi occupation, arguing that the proposal ignores historical truths regarding his refusal to distance himself from fascism.
