FAO and Japan launch climate‑resilience program for Moldovan orchard and bee farmers
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), backed by a $190,000 grant from the Government of Japan, has started a climate‑adaptation project for orchardists and beekeepers in the Republic of Moldova. The initiative was presented at a meeting in the village of Hulboaca, Grătiești commune, attended by state officials, research institutes, producer organisations and farmers. State Secretary Vasile Șarban of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry highlighted that the programme addresses the real needs of producers hit by extreme weather, while Japanese Ambassador Kazuyuki Takeuchi stressed agriculture’s strategic importance and the need for cooperation, innovation and knowledge exchange.
The project will create three farmer field schools equipped with demonstration plots and frost‑protection technologies, provide supplemental feed to beekeepers in ten districts, and promote joint orchard‑bee collaboration to improve pollination and develop value‑added products for the EU market. Training, practical experience and technology transfer are intended to increase resilience against frosts and improve productivity across the horticultural and apicultural sectors.
