FAO and Mexico sign 140 million dollar agri-food agreement

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Government of Mexico have signed a Country Programming Framework (MPP) for 2026–2031. This agreement, valued at approximately 140 million dollars, aims to guide technical and financial cooperation to accelerate the transition toward more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems in Mexico.

The partnership seeks to strengthen the Mexican agricultural sector and promote food sovereignty. This initiative aligns with the FAO’s broader multilateral efforts to promote crop diversity through seed exchange between global communities. Such measures are intended to combat the risks posed by industrial monoculture, deforestation, and climate change, which have increased crop vulnerability to pests, diseases, and droughts.

By providing a platform for governments, farmers, and scientists to engage in the development of diverse agricultural varieties, the FAO aims to protect genetic variability and mitigate the impact of environmental stressors, such as the heat waves currently affecting crop yields in various regions.
