FAO Committee on Fisheries sees leadership changes and community model presentations
At the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Fisheries (COFI) sessions, key developments were highlighted regarding global fisheries management and community-led models.
Chilean Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Osvaldo Urrutia, was elected president for the 38th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries in Rome. Urrutia stated that his leadership will focus on balancing resource sustainability with global food security, emphasizing that discussions must move beyond extraction volumes to include human nutrition and the protection of marine ecosystems.
During the 37th session, Venezuela's Vice Minister of Primary Production, Fisheries, and Aquaculture, Pedro Emilio Guerra Castellano, presented the Conppa model (Councils of People's Power of Fishers, Fishers, Aquaculturists, and Aquaculturists). This community management model aims to place organized communities at the center of public policy formulation and execution. The presentation also highlighted programs such as ‘Tejiendo Redes’ to support women in the value chain and ‘Juventud Pesquera’ to ensure generational renewal through technical training.
