The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that global food prices rose in August, reaching their highest levels since late 2022. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 133.3 points, marking a 1.9% increase from July.

Key drivers for the price surge include extreme weather conditions, such as heatwaves and droughts in Europe and the El Niño phenomenon in Asia, which have impacted crop yields. Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea and the Middle East have disrupted trade logistics and supply chains, particularly affecting grain and fertilizer movements.

Among specific commodities, sugar saw the most significant increase of 11.9%. Cereal prices rose by 2.2%, with wheat increasing by 2.6%. While most categories saw upward movement, meat prices experienced a decrease of 2.8%, and dairy prices fell by 0.7%.
