Fariba Hashimi wins Asian Games silver after training in disguise

Fariba Hashimi, a 23-year-old Afghan cyclist, won the silver medal in the women's road cycling race at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. Her victory follows a difficult journey of survival and resilience.

To continue training in Afghanistan, Hashimi was forced to disguise herself as a man and wear masks to avoid being recognized or attacked by those opposing women's participation in sports. She reported facing physical aggression, including being pelted with stones, while cycling in her home province of Faryab.

Following the Taliban's return to power in 2021, Hashimi and her sister, Yulduz, fled Afghanistan. They eventually relocated to Italy with the assistance of former world champion Alessandra Cappellotto. Hashimi, who now trains in Italy, has previously competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics and aims to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. She expressed hope that her achievement serves as an inspiration for women in Afghanistan to pursue their dreams despite current restrictions.
