Faridabad: Three-year-old girl dies after falling into deep borewell
A three-year-old girl, identified as Neha, died after falling into an abandoned, uncovered borewell in Seehi village, Faridabad, Haryana. The incident occurred on Sunday evening while she was playing with other children.
A massive multi-agency rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Haryana Police, fire services, and municipal authorities lasted approximately ten hours. Rescuers faced significant challenges, including the borewell's depth—estimated between 200 and 300 feet—and the presence of water at a depth of 125 feet.
Teams utilized oxygen supplies and even fabricated a specialized tool on-site to assist the extraction. The girl was successfully pulled from the borewell early Monday morning, around 3:50 AM, but she was found unresponsive. Upon being rushed to a hospital, she was declared dead by medical professionals.
The incident has sparked local outrage and raised serious questions regarding the safety of abandoned municipal borewells. Residents have criticized authorities for failing to secure the opening, which had reportedly been left uncovered after its lid went missing.
