Wolfgang Skischally warns of indoor air pollution from VOCs

Wolfgang Skischally of Wellness Sanofit explains that modern buildings are constructed increasingly airtight to improve energy efficiency. This reduces natural air exchange, causing indoor air to often contain higher levels of pollutants than the outdoors.

A major source of indoor contamination is volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals evaporate at room temperature from a wide range of everyday materials – new furniture, carpet backing, paints, varnishes, adhesives, cleaning agents and even scented personal‑care products. VOCs, along with carbon‑dioxide produced by occupants’ breathing, can accumulate quickly in poorly ventilated rooms. Many of these substances are colourless and odourless, so occupants may not notice them.

Skischally stresses that relatively simple actions can markedly improve indoor air quality. Regular window opening or mechanical ventilation, combined with the selection of low‑emission building and furnishing materials, can lower VOC concentrations and CO₂ levels, making the indoor environment healthier.
