Farm bankruptcies rise amid tightening credit conditions

Agricultural bankruptcies are on an upward trend, with projections suggesting a potential 22 percent increase in filings by 2026. Data from the Data on Economic and Bankruptcy Trends in Agriculture (DEBT) project indicates that incorporating Chapter 11 data reveals approximately 18 percent more bankruptcies than previously recorded.

Tightening farm margins are also affecting credit conditions. While the proportion of lenders reporting lower loan repayment rates has declined in some areas, borrowers continue to face significant challenges in meeting their debt obligations.
