Farmácia Popular program offers significant savings for Brazilian families
Brazil’s Farmácia Popular program provides free or subsidized access to 41 essential items, including medications for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as geriatric diapers and sanitary pads. In 2025, the program served over 27 million Brazilians.
For a family of four, the program can generate annual savings of up to R$ 8.8 thousand. Specific savings examples include R$ 3,240 annually for geriatric diapers and significant reductions in costs for treating cholesterol, hypertension, and hormonal contraceptives.
To assist citizens, the Ministry of Health provides information through the Disque Saúde hotline at 0800 61 1997, which operates 24/7. While there is no official WhatsApp or chat service for the program, users can find accredited pharmacies and medication lists via the hotline or the official website. Recent regulations from the Ministry of Health aim to modernize the program through technological updates and improved monitoring.
