Farmer Christopher Wright sentenced to life for murder and body‑in‑barrel crime

Christopher Wright, a 73‑year‑old farmer and former butcher, was convicted at Sheffield Crown Court of murdering 55‑year‑old Richard Dyson, who had been living in a vehicle on Wright’s land in South Yorkshire. After shooting Dyson in the arm and chest, Wright dismembered the victim, bought cement and concealed the body parts in a blue barrel, which he later placed on a trailer and had an unwitting neighbour store.

Wright was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 35 years. His childhood friend, 72‑year‑old Karl Schwalbe, was found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice for helping hide the barrel and received a three‑year sentence. The judge, Mr Justice Cotter, highlighted Wright’s skill as a former butcher in committing the gruesome act. Victims’ family members gave statements, expressing the prolonged anguish caused by the six‑year concealment of Dyson’s remains.
