Farmers and trade unions protest central government policies in India

Farmers and trade unions across India are conducting demonstrations to protest against central government policies they describe as anti-farmer and anti-worker. In Kurukshetra, members of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Central Trade Unions (CTUs) staged protests citing concerns over a proposed India-US trade deal, which they claim could depress domestic prices through cheaper imports and harm agricultural communities.

Protesters also expressed opposition to the privatization of electricity and the implementation of prepaid smart meters. Key demands include a law guaranteeing minimum support prices based on the National Commission on Farmers' formula, a comprehensive farm loan waiver, increased old-age pensions, and a minimum wage of Rs 28,000 per month.

In Mandya, a joint protest by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and farmer organizations led to a highway blockade on the old Mysuru-Bengaluru highway. Activists demanded the withdrawal of labour laws affecting workers' rights and opposed the proposed Bidadi township project, alleging the government intends to acquire fertile agricultural land. The demonstration resulted in confrontations with police and the detention of several activists and leaders.
