Perennial grains offered as solution to extreme weather for farmers

Farmers are increasingly exploring the use of perennial grains to build resilience against extreme weather patterns, such as intense droughts and heavy rainfall. Unlike traditional annual crops, perennial grains like Kernza do not require yearly planting, harvesting, and replanting, which can reduce labor and costs over several years.

These crops feature deep root systems that can access water deep underground during droughts and help absorb excess water during heavy rains to prevent soil erosion. Additionally, these deeper roots can sequester more carbon in the soil, potentially mitigating climate change. A 2024 United Nations report noted that soil degradation could result in over $20 trillion in global economic losses by 2050.

Despite these benefits, widespread adoption faces significant hurdles. Researchers are still working to develop perennial versions of common grains like wheat, sorghum, and rice. Current challenges include lower yields compared to annual crops, more difficult harvesting processes, and a still-developing market for these products.
