Farmers in Ghana and India Hit by Prolonged Dry Spells Threatening Crops

In Ghana's Upper East Region, weeks of little or no rainfall have left farmers in the Nabdam, Talensi, Bolgatanga East and Bawku West districts facing severe crop stress. Millet, maize and other early‑season crops have failed to germinate or are wilting, with farmers such as Ziyaba Yen, Thomas Kolog and James Ayamga reporting hard, dry soils, weed competition and the prospect of a lost harvest.

Meanwhile, in India's Adilabad district, a delayed monsoon followed by a July rain break has left cotton, soybean and red gram growers anxious about the Kharif season. Farmer Mora Kishtu described a 20‑acre cotton field that now depends on timely rain, while laborers worry about both yields and employment. Both regions attribute the erratic weather to broader climatic influences, including the El Niño effect.
