Farmers postpone Delhi march after central government meeting is scheduled

Protesting farmers have postponed their ‘Kisan Bachao Padayatra’ march to Delhi and called off a sit-in at the Khanauri-Data Singhwala border following assurances of talks with the central government. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha agreed to halt their movement after being promised a meeting with Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on September 4 in New Delhi.

The standoff occurred after Haryana Police used concrete barriers, barbed wire, and water cannons to block a group of 51 farmers from proceeding toward the capital. The farmers were demanding several concessions, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), full debt waivers, and the exclusion of the agricultural sector from proposed India-US trade agreements.

Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal stated that while the protest is currently suspended, the movement will resume if the scheduled meeting is cancelled or postponed. Following the decision to withdraw, authorities are expected to remove the barricades and reopen the national highway.
