Farnham cider producer urges stricter labelling standards

Kathryn Lockett, founder of Farnham‑based Misty Moon Cider, is supporting the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) push for tighter regulation of the UK cider industry. Under current UK rules a drink may be sold as cider with as little as 35 % apple juice, the remainder being water, sugar and concentrate. CAMRA is campaigning to raise the minimum juice content to at least 50 % – ideally 85 % – and to require clearer labelling of where and how the cider is produced.

A YouGov poll commissioned by CAMRA found that 87 % of consumers back raising the juice threshold, seeing it as a way to protect traditional cider and halt orchard decline. The campaign notes that the United States already mandates a 50 % juice floor, and similar rules are pending in Germany and under consideration in the EU.

Misty Moon Cider, which harvests local apples in Surrey and Hampshire, rescued seven tonnes of surplus apples last year, turning them into craft cider and providing orchard owners an outlet for otherwise wasted fruit. Lockett says stricter rules and honest labelling would level the playing field for small‑scale producers.
