Faro to manage commercial pier for new marina project
The Faro City Council will assume management of the commercial pier starting September 18, marking the first phase of the ‘Hub Mar’ project. This transition follows a protocol agreement with the Administration of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve (APS).
The initiative aims to develop a natural marina within the pier's interior area, capable of accommodating approximately 500 vessels. The project also intends to establish infrastructure related to nautical activities and scientific research. Faro Mayor António Miguel Pina stated that the project is nearly complete, with an environmental impact study expected to begin within one to two months.
The commercial pier has lacked regular activity for nearly a decade. Through this redevelopment, the municipality seeks to revitalize the area, combat tourism seasonality, and generate year-round employment by integrating local heritage and culture with maritime economic activity.
