Faro to name athletics track after Artur Lara Ramos

The city of Faro will posthumously name its athletics track after Artur Lara Ramos, a prominent figure in Algarve athletics. The tribute ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 7, as part of the municipal holiday celebrations.

Lara Ramos, who passed away in December 2025 at the age of 78, was a decisive promoter of the track's construction. He played a key role in the project from the initial site selection through the design and construction phases. The facility, which cost over four million euros and features eight lanes, was finally inaugurated in 2008 after decades of delays caused by funding issues and terrain complications.

A former athlete for FC Porto and Sporting, Lara Ramos specialized in sprinting, pole vault, and long jump. He later became a coach and served as the president of the Algarve Athletics Association.
