Farooq Abdullah sparks controversy with remarks on Pakistan and Kashmir

National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has drawn intense political criticism following remarks made during a party convention in Baramulla. Abdullah claimed that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at international forums have helped protect Kashmiris and keep the issue alive globally.

Abdullah questioned the Indian government’s intentions toward the region, suggesting that New Delhi is currently silent due to international pressure. He urged Kashmiris to fight for their rights and identity, expressing skepticism about whether they could expect justice from the central government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the statements as “seditious and anti-national,” with leaders demanding a public apology and legal action. The Congress party also expressed objection, stating that while individuals may hold personal views, India will not tolerate foreign interference in its internal affairs. Additionally, former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad criticized Abdullah’s assessment, asserting that Pakistan is an enemy of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
