Far‑right extremist invasions of USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences
A new sociological study examines the surge of attacks by Brazil's far‑right on public universities, focusing on the 2025 occupations of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) at the University of São Paulo (USP). The authors argue that these incursions are staged political performances designed to delegitimize academic knowledge, amplify hate through digital networks, and gain media visibility.
The article, published in the June 2026 issue of the Revista Brasileira de Sociologia, provides the first systematic analysis of such invasions, linking them to broader right‑wing discourses that portray universities as leftist strongholds. It highlights how online amplification, authoritarian rhetoric, and disinformation campaigns combine to turn campus protests into spectacles that reinforce extremist narratives across Brazil.
