Fascia health and restorative yoga poses for spinal relief
Recent insights into human anatomy highlight the importance of the fascial system, described as an ‘uninterrupted viscoelastic tissue’ that forms a three-dimensional collagen matrix throughout the body. Unlike previous understandings based on cadaver studies, modern imaging shows that fascia is an active, responsive tissue that integrates bodily functions and requires diverse stimuli beyond simple stretching to maintain health.
To address physical tension and spinal discomfort, experts suggest incorporating restorative movements such as Balasana, or ‘child’s pose.’ According to yoga instructor Valerie Williams of the Cleveland Clinic, this position helps relieve pressure on the lower back caused by prolonged sitting by allowing the spine to stretch and lengthen. The pose offers several benefits, including the reduction of stress, relief from tension in the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions, and support for the circulatory and digestive systems.
