Fashion industry debates intensify over wool production ethics
Recent protests at fashion weeks in London and New York have reignited debates regarding the ethics and sustainability of wool production. During London Fashion Week, PETA protesters interrupted an H&M show with signs labeling wool as “bloody cruel,” sparking discussions on whether current industry standards are sufficient.
Stella McCartney, a long-time advocate for animal rights, addressed these concerns during Paris Fashion Week. McCartney noted that while she believes sheep can be sheared humanely, she emphasized that much of modern wool production is “deeply cruel.” To mitigate impact, she has utilized fermented alternatives like Brewed Protein, developed with Japanese biotech firm Spiber.
Industry perspectives remain divided. PETA advocates for animal-free alternatives, citing investigations into shearing sheds in the US and Australia that uncovered animal abuse. Conversely, The Textile Exchange promotes responsible wool standards, arguing that certified practices can contribute to positive outcomes for climate, nature, and animal welfare.
