Fashion industry shifts away from 'perfect body' standards

The fashion industry is seeing a growing movement that questions traditional beauty standards and the pressure to alter one's body to fit specific garment designs. Historically, fashion has utilized tools like corsets and padded undergarments to force bodies into desired shapes, such as the hourglass figures of the 1950s or the thin frames popularized in the 1960s and 1990s.

Experts, including Dr. Valerie Steele of the Museum at FIT, note that the concept of a ‘perfect body’ has been a shifting target, moving from the fuller figures of the mid-century to the extreme thinness exemplified by models like Twiggy and Kate Moss. While runway models often remain thin, there is an increasing focus on clothing designed to work with a person’s natural shape rather than requiring them to adapt to the garment.
