Fashion Institute of Technology student killed and raped after being drugged with fentanyl

Federal prosecutors have announced new charges in a case involving the death and sexual assault of a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan. Prosecutors allege that on March 18, Moises Freire, 19, brought fentanyl to a student dormitory and falsely claimed the substance was pure cocaine.

According to the indictment, Freire encouraged two female students to consume the drug, causing them to lose consciousness almost immediately. Prosecutors allege that while one student was incapacitated by a fentanyl overdose, Freire raped her and took explicit photographs of her. The victim, identified in some reports as Annabel Richter, died on March 21 from acute fentanyl poisoning. A second student also ingested the drug but survived.

Moises Freire faces charges including conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death and distribution of a controlled substance with intent to commit rape. Brian Peralta Cabrera, 18, is charged with conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death and serious bodily injury. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty and remain in federal custody. A third individual, Harry Rosales Pino, has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death and is awaiting sentencing in December. If convicted, Freire and Peralta Cabrera face a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison and the possibility of life imprisonment.
