Fashion trends embrace past aesthetics and anemoia

Fashion trends are increasingly characterized by a return to past aesthetics, a phenomenon known as ‘anemoia’—a fascination with eras one has not personally experienced. This trend is driven by the idealization of previous decades through media, music, and social networks, allowing styles like 1970s boho, 1980s and 90s aesthetics, and Y2K fashion to resurface rapidly.

Social media algorithms have accelerated this cycle, enabling different eras to coexist and trends to reappear within months rather than decades. Generation Z is a primary driver of this movement, particularly regarding the Y2K aesthetic.

In response to these shifts, retailers like Zara are incorporating romantic elements into their collections. Current trends include ‘cottagecore’ styles featuring ruffles, lace, satin finishes, and floral details, often paired with voluminous ‘bombacho’ trousers.
