Fast Fashion Brands Face Growing Sustainability Criticism

A recent assessment highlights the environmental and social harms of ultra‑fast fashion companies that prioritize speed and low cost over responsible practices. Brands such as SHEIN, Temu and Princess Polly are identified as operating on a model that fuels over‑production, generates massive textile waste and frequently uses hazardous synthetic materials. The rapid turnover of cheap items encourages disposable consumption and contributes to landfill accumulation.

The report also notes that workers in these supply chains often endure unsafe conditions and low wages, while animal welfare is affected by the use of fur, skin and chemical pollutants that enter waterways. Established fast‑fashion operators like Zara, ASOS and Topshop have long been scrutinised for similar issues, but the newer ultra‑fast players are pushing the pace even further, selling garments for less than a pound and offering minimal transparency about their sourcing or environmental impact.
