Fast-food chains pivot toward hospitality and AI integration

Major fast-food chains, including McDonald's, Burger King, and Starbucks, are shifting their focus toward increased human interaction to improve customer experience. Following feedback that digital-first environments felt ‘rushed, impersonal, sterile and cold,’ companies are retraining staff and redesigning restaurant layouts to prioritize hospitality.

Mcdonald's is launching a ‘Make it Golden’ program to retrain two million workers globally, while Burger King is moving kiosks to the side of lobbies to make room for staffed counters.

Simultaneously, McDonald's has announced an $8.5 billion ‘McDonald's > NEXT’ modernization strategy through 2036. This plan aims to combat declining domestic traffic by integrating advanced technology alongside physical upgrades. Key features include ‘Archy,’ a proprietary AI voice-ordering engine for drive-thrus, and ‘ArchIQ,’ an AI system developed with Google to automate inventory and kitchen workflows. Physical improvements will include upgraded PlayPlaces, remodeled dining rooms, and dedicated McDelivery collection lockers.
