Fast tech trend drives surge in electronic waste across Europe

The rise of ‘fast tech’—inexpensive, short-lived electronic gadgets such as USB adapters, LED lights, and electronic toys—is driving a significant increase in electronic waste (e-waste) across Europe and Ireland.

A survey commissioned by the WEEE Forum and conducted by Bellegarde Scientific Consulting involving over 10,000 adults across 12 European countries found that nearly 90% of consumers own at least one fast-tech device, with 78% having purchased one in the last year. The research highlights a trend where consumers accept a bargain of low cost and short lifespan, often discarding items after only a few months or even a single use.

Disposal habits remain a major concern, as 29% of consumers hoard unused devices at home while 27% dispose of them in household rubbish rather than recycling them. In Ireland, the rapid turnover of technology and aggressive marketing are cited as key drivers of the e-waste surge, posing environmental risks as toxic substances from discarded electronics can leach into soil and waterways.
